چکیده

Glucocorticoids have been the mainstay of therapy of asthma because of their antiinflammatory action. They have potential for many adverse effects, especially with continued use. However, the inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) have a better safety profile than the oral steroids. In view of the long term requirement for ICS in childhood asthma, there have been lots of investigations on the adverse effects in the growing children. The major areas of concern have been the local side-effects due to the deposition of the ICS aerosol in the oropharynx and the upper airway, effects due to the absorption of the ICS which may lead to systemic effects on growth, hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and on various metabolic pathways. The documented effects on the growth are minimal. Similarly, the suppression of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis with low doses of ICS is minimal.

Bone mineral density in asthmatic patients treated with inhaled corticosteroids: a case-control study.

Recent studies suggest that inhaled corticosteroids can adversely affect bone metabolism. The objective of this study was to evaluate the importance of these adverse effects in a case-control study. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured in 48 asthmatic adults (15 males and 33 females) treated with inhaled steroids (beclomethasone or budesonide) and in 48 gender and age-matched healthy subject...

A 67 year old man who had had asthma for 10 years was referred for respiratory assessment. He had had noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus for 40 years and was taking glibenclamide 5 mg and metformin 1700 mg daily. Glycaemic control was monitored every six weeks in an outpa...

Spirometry Findings Following Treatment with Oral and Inhalant Corticosteroids in Mild to Moderate Asthma Exacerbation in Children

Introduction:  Asthma exacerbation is common in children. Treatment with oral corticosteroids (OCS) and inhaled corticosteroids are suggested for asthma exacerbation. It is shown that inhaled corticosteroids has similar outcome in reducing asthma symptoms compared to OCS. But few studies have evaluated the pulmonary function changes in these two treatments. In this study, we evaluated the chang...
